About the book
Think of Kavos on the Greek Island of Corfu and you will probably think of the lively, all night drinking parties that TV programmes have delighted in showing us. But Peter and Natasha Stoneley's first experience of Kavos was in the days when it was a tiny, blissful fishing village shrouded in olive trees at the end of a winding, dusty road, with nowhere else to go except into the clear calm water of the Mediterranean.
"to watch the waves go by" tells the sometimes humorous, sometimes emotional story of their intoxication with the colours, the people and the part of the island called "flat" in the guide books; and charts the pitfalls and pleasures of holiday home ownership in a Greek island village.
The pitfalls include a problem with the Greek law when their contract for the purchase of eleven olive trees was declared illegal, a problem with the Council when it wanted to demolish their house in order to build a road, and the Greek weather which tried to undo their work.
The pleasures include the many wildlife visitors, the productive garden, the many, many friends and the glorious Greek weather (most of the time). The story follows them into retirement and into a problem with the Customs when they drove an English car onto the island, and to the eventual discovery of peace and tranquillity on a sea kissed beach a few kilometres from where they started.
About the author.
Born in Dorset but educated in Hampshire, Peter Stoneley first trained as a map maker before joining the Royal Engineers for his two years National Service which he finished in Kenya, during the Mau Mau uprising. After retraining as a quantity surveyor in the building industry, he spent the remainder of what he calls his "working life" gadding about various building and maintenance sites across the south of England. Some called him the trouble-shooter, others the troublemaker. Where there was trouble, there was Peter Stoneley. If it didn't precede him, it followed him, even to Corfu.
